About ftp.df.lth.se

This service is hosted and maintained by the computer society at Lund University and Lund Institute of Technology, also known as DF. We are very thankful to the donation made by the Swedish Internet Fund that made it possible to buy new hardware.

This service is hosted on two SuperMicro servers delivered by Mullet Scandinavia. The system is designed to handle 6000 simultaneous connections and still keeping the 1Gbps pipe filled. To reduce system load we have a limit on how many simultaneous connection a single IP can use. The HTTP service is handled by lighttpd, the FTP-service is handled by vsftpd. The Debian installation is "slightly" tuned for optimum performance.

The old system we used, a SunFire 280R with 2x750MHz and 2GB of ram, had several performance issues. This was most due to the disk arrays that flattened out at 30MB/s and the low amount of ram that made it hard to use cache. As we all know, cache is king. ;) This configuration could still handle 3000 connections and push about 550Mbps.
